Mortal

I am mortal and I will die someday.

Lisa fell down the cement stairs leading to her apartment.  She lies in her hospital bed as we wait.  The last time I saw her was at a family get together?and before that we danced together at the Rainbow Cactus.  That?s how I remember her?dancing.

A cat, a pet of seventeen years begins to waste with old age.  Sputnik, dark gray stripes, such a long tail, frail, staggering, thin now is gently put to sleep?forever?as Robert holds Jade and she cries?as Will holds Sputnik and he falls asleep?forever.  I was fine until Will put him into the box and I could see his eyes, open and lifeless and then I cried.

You never know what a day will bring or what it will even be like fifteen minutes from now?as we all learned on September 11th.

Robert has just come home and he brought a bag full of corn grown on the farm of a friend.  I will cook corn and be thankful I am alive to taste it.
